Scottish Women's Premier League Spartans 9 Falkirk 0

30 October 2011

Spartans move up

Spartans beat a plucky Falkirk today at Ainslie Park, Clelland got the scoring underway twelve minutes in when she pounced on a Falkirk mistake drove towards goal and slotted low past Watson in the Falkirk goal. Five minutes later Clelland headed towards the back post where Barry turned and stroked the ball into the far corner. A further five minutes had past

when Mason looked up and floated a ball into the net from twelve yards. Lauders shot on the angle was parried by Watson only for Clelland to finish from two yards for her second and Spartans fourth.

Five minutes into the second half and Crosbie headed home a Barry cross before a Clelland cut back was hammered home by Kirsty McLaughlin. On the hour mark Clelland was involved again when her cross was well finished by Ewens. Kirsty McLaughlin's second was a strike from twenty yards which gave Watson no chance. Three minutes from time a neat ball from Barry released Ewens who finished with style for her second of the day and her 20th of the season.

Credit must be given to Falkirk who battled for the full ninety minutes and made Spartans work very hard for their victory. In the later stages of the game Falkirk's Susie MacLellan went in for a challenge and hit the surface heavily, all at Spartans wish her a speedy recovery.

Spartans go 2nd equal with Hibs who have completed their matches and one point ahead of Celtic who Spartans will meet in the final game of the season next week. Today's results mean Spartans need a draw to secure runners up spot while Celtic require a victory.

UEFA Women's Euro 2013 Qualifier  Scotland 2 Wales 2

27 October 2011

Lament from Lauder as Scots are held to draw by Welsh

Scotland drew 2-2 with Wales in a pulsating encounter at Tynecastle.

Scotland’s second match of the Euro 2013 qualifying campaign was end to end throughout with both sides having plenty of chances in front of goal.

The visitors took the lead after just three minutes thanks to Cardiff City’s Amie Lea, and were almost two goals up within minutes, but Helen Lander fired wide.

Scotland equalised just before the twenty minute mark after great link-up play from the front pairing. The ball fell to Jennifer Beattie and her fine pass released her strike partner Jane Ross, who coolly finished for her second goal of the qualifying campaign. more

Scotland Looking To Continue Good Start

Scotland women started their Euro 2013 qualifying campaign with a convincing victory over Israel away thanks to a brace from Kim Little and goals from Jane Ross, Jennifer Beattie, Spartans Hayley Lauder and an own goal. The first home game of the campaign sees Scotland welcome Wales to Tynecastle Park. Wales go into Thursday’s game on the back of a 4-1 home defeat to France.

Anna Signeul said “We know Wales will be a difficult game for us. We played them earlier this year in Wales. It was a tough game then and they have progressed a great deal since. They have a number of players in the FA Women's Super League in England and the competitive fixtures their players have been playing in will make this a difficult match for us.”

Scottish Women's Premier League Hibernian 4 Spartans 4

16 October 2011

Lana Sparkles In Thriller

Spartans travelled to West Lothian today to meet Hibernian in a 3rd v 4th league match. It didn't take long for the scoring to commence with Spartans taking a 2 minute lead when Lauder drove in from the left flank and fired a shot past Lynn in the Hibs goal. The lead however only lasted a minute when Hibs equalised, Crichton drove through the middle and slipped a ball to Emslie who shot low past Harrison. Spartans then had shots from Clelland, Lauder and Barry all saved by Lynn then Barry shot over and Crosbie wide from a Kirsty McLaughlin corner. Hibs Cunningham then tried her luck from 20 yards, shooting wide before Crichton shot from distance, this time finding the top right hand corner from 25 yards to put Hibs 2-1 ahead. Lauder then went 1v1 with Lynn who blocked her shot well. With only 22 minutes on the clock Spartans went further behind when Harrison could only palm Murray's free-kick from the left touch line into the net. At this stage the 3-1 score line was cruel on Spartans but it almost got worse when Emslie hit the post and Cunningham fired in the rebound only for the ball to be cleared of the line. Spartans responded well, Lauder's cross was side footed home by Clelland to close the gap to 3-2 with only 27 minutes played. Kennedy then had a shot saved by Harrison before team mate Murray hit a 45 yard free kick, this time from the right touchline, which dipped under the cross bar Harrison having lost the flight of the ball in the strong sunshine.

LANA CLELLAND
Clelland then scored her second when she lobbed the ball over the advancing Lynn to reduce the deficit to 4-3. Young then finished of the first half with a shot that went wide of Lynn's left post.
Spartans started the 2nd half with Clelland getting in behind the Hibs back four but was adjudged to be offside. Barry was then through 1 on 1 but Lynn saved Barry's shot. Barry then flashed a good ball over the face of Hibs goal but there was no takers. Hibs then blocked Crosbie's effort on the line from McLaughlin's corner. Emslie then sent a good cross into the Spartans box but Magilton cleared. Emslie then watched her  powerful strike hit the top of the bar. In the 64th minute Farquhar sent a long ball down the right flank, a sprinting Clelland fired an unstoppable shot into the far corner for the goal of the match to bring the score level at 4-4 and round of her hat-trick, her first goals for the club. Lauder then had an excellent run and shot which just cleared Hibs crossbar. Harrison then saved Thomson's effort from a corner and Weir's prod towards goal hit the post and bounced back into Harrison's arms. Spartans then thought they were going to snatch the win when McKean was through on goal but Lynn once again came out on top in a 1v1 situation. Murray then had a chance at the back post from a Weir cross but fired wide while Hibs managed to block Ewens shot from the edge of the box. This was a magnificent match for the neutral and certainly an exciting one for supporters from both sides. The share of the points was probably in the end the right outcome it would have been harsh on either side to have lost this one after the effort and commitment displayed by both sets of players.

Scottish Women's Premier League - Spartans 7 Hutchison Vale 1

09 October 2011

Spartans welcomed local rivals Hutchison Vale for the first time this season, with the previous two encounters away from home ending in a 4-1 league Cup triumph for Spartans followed by a 1-1 draw in the league.

Today was Spartans first game on their fantastic new pitch and they were determined to make it a winning start. Hutchison Vale thought differently and went 1-0 ahead with only two minutes on the clock. A mix-up in the back four allowed Hutchie to play the ball in behind the Spartans defence and Nicola Russell finished well on the angle. Both teams passed up chances to score with Clelland rattling the crossbar with a powerful strike and both Goalkeepers pulling off saves. On the half hour mark Spartans made the breakthrough when Kirsty McLaughlin fired home from the edge of the box.

Six minutes before the interval Spartans took the lead when Lauder back heeled to Kirsty McLaughlin, her shot was parried by Nadia Russell only to see Barry first to react and slam home for a 2-1 advantage.
After the break Spartans looked like a different team and started to move and pass the ball around with a purpose that had been missing in the first half and within ten minutes had scored three times to go 5-1 ahead. The first was from Scotland Internationalist Lauder who fired home from inside the six yard box after Barry cut the ball back from the bye line. Then Kirsty McLaughlin added her second of the match when she went 1v1 with Nadia Russell after a well timed run, slotting home. Ewens then lobbed Nadia Russell from the edge of the box, Russell scrambled the ball out however the lineswomen well placed to signal that the ball had crossed the line. Mason then added a sixth when she placed a shot past Nadia Russell just past the hour mark. Nadia Russell then palmed out a Mason strike, Magilton raced on to the loose ball drove to the bye line cutting back for Barry to finish easily from ten yards. Spartans played well in the second half and Hutchison Vale had their young goalkeeper to thank for keeping the score down to seven after pulling off several good saves throughout the match.  Click here for photo report

Scottish Women's Premier League - Spartans 1 Glasgow City 6

02 October 2011

Glasgow City lifted the SWPL title for a phenomenal 5 years in a row after defeating Spartans 6-1 in Edinburgh. Having won every League match so far this campaign, City have won the title with three games to spare and can now look forward to their second leg in the UEFA Women’s Champions League last 32 match against Valur Reykjavik in Iceland on Thursday, knowing that domestic matters are now all tied up. City got off to the perfect start scoring in less than five minutes when Rachel Corsie cut the ball back from the touchline to defensive partner Danica Dalziel to fire home from inside the 6 yard box.

Seconds later a great run by Jo Love was found by Kat Lindner and only an excellent stop from

Rachel Harrison in the Spartans goals, denied Love doubling the visitors lead.

Harrison produced a great one-handed save on 25 minutes to put a Christie Murray effort over the bar, but she could do nothing to prevent City’s second goal as Emma Woolley sent a neat chip over the defence to Jo Love and the City and Scotland midfielder fired the ball low into the back of the net.

Three minutes later and Love got her second of the match and City’s third with an exquisite lob over Harrison after a well placed pass into her run by Dalziel.

Not long after the restart and Spartans got a goal back in the most bizarre of fashions as City gifted a goal through a misplaced pass which came back off their own post and into the path of Hayley Lauder, who finished from a yard out despite the best efforts of City Captain Rachel Corsie.

Christie Murray restored City’s three goal cushion when she drilled home a free kick after Jo Love was fouled at the edge of the box.

The City striker then got another when she hit another impressive right foot shot from the edge of the box into the top corner, leaving Harrison no chance.

The score finished 6-1 after Lisa Evans raced on to a great pass from Corsie before rounding Harrison and finishing with ease.

Spartans were outplayed today by a slick Glasgow City who fully deserves their fifth title. Spartans are aware that their opponents are way ahead of every other team in the league and must now take stock and consider how they are going to close the gap that exists.

Scottish Women's Premier League - Spartans v Glasgow City

02 October 2011

Spartans welcome Glasgow City to the Academy Sunday for a 2:00pm kick-off. Glasgow City return to league business after the first leg of their European Champions League tie with Valur Reykjavik midweek when they were unlucky to only record a 1-1 draw having had the lion share of chances during the match.
Spartans Kirsty Hamilton (left) is the only absentee from the squad after she received cruciate ligament surgery this week, we all wish Kirsty a speedy recovery and hopefully it won't be too long before she can begin her re-hab.
Lana Clelland and Vicky Farquhar are both available for selection after missing out in the last two games. Lana has been on International duty with the U19's where she recorded two hat-tricks against the Faroe Islands and Belarus. Vicky was cup-tied for both the Buchan and Hibs games.

Spartans Kristy Reaches 50 (Games that is)

Congratulations to Kristy Scott in reaching her first mile stone for the club. Kristy played her 50th game against Buchan earlier this month.

Kristy joined the club as a striker back in September 2009 from Raith Rovers where she had been a loyal servant.

Kristy was moved from striker to midfielder and then to centre half (goalkeeper next?) she has been a brilliant player for Spartans during her time both on the park, on the training pitch and in the dressing room, she possesses an infectious determination to win and gives her all every time she plays.  A fantastic role model for the younger players. We look forward to Kristy's next 50 games in a Spartan's shirt.

Women's Scottish Cup Quarter Final - Hibs 3 Spartans 1

25 September 2011

Spartans Exit at Quarter-Final stage

Spartans travelled to West Lothian for their Scottish Cup quarter final tie with Hibs looking for their tenth consecutive victory but it was not to be as Hibs shot to a three goal advantage in the first half, clinical build up and finishing gave Hibs a deserved lead at half time. The second half was very different with Spartans dominating the majority of the half. Crosbie's headed goal gave Spartans hope after Barry's penalty was saved by Lynn who pulled of two more tremendous saves to keep Spartans at bay. On their first half display Hibs deservedly progressed to the semi-finals and we wish them well. In the other ties Glasgow City beat Forfar 4-1, Celtic beat Toryglen 4-3 and Celtic Reserves beat Raith Rovers 1-0.

Scot's "Finnish" T op

Finland 1 Scotland 1

Scotland U19's finished top of the 1st qualifying round of the UEFA Championship table after a 1-1 draw with hosts Finland. A 44th minute goal from Mairead Fulton gave Scotland a half-time lead. Fifteen minutes from time defender Emma Koivisto equalised for the Finns.

Scotland's superior goal count was the difference between the two teams in the end.

Scottish Women's Challenge Match  Scotland 7 Finland 2

21 September 2011

Anna Signeul’s side were keen to avenge the 1-0 defeat in Finland on Sunday and did it in style with an 7-2 win over at Tynecastle.

The match was the first women’s match at Tynecastle Stadium since it was announced as Scotland’s home for the UEFA Women’s European Championship qualifiers and the occasion was marked with with a comfortable win over Finland.

Scotland were the quickest out the blocks with Spartans Hayley Lauder scoring just two minutes into the match. Hayley was on hand to score after Finland goalkeeper Korpela had parried a Jennifer Beattie header. However, it was Finland that looked most dangerous after the goal and Gemma Fay had to be alert on a number of occasions to stop the Fins equalising. The equaliser did come though and in bizarre circumstances. An innocuous looking back pass from Rhonda Jones completely wrong-footing Fay and finding its way into the net.

The rest of the half was all Scotland. The Finland defence had to look sharp to block Jennifer Beattie on two occasions before Korpela punched away a Leanne Ross cross with the resulting corner from Hayley Lauder causing havoc in the Finland box.

Jennifer Beattie was looking dangerous up front and it came as no surprise when she scored to put Scotland back in the lead. Neat play down the wing from Hayler Lauder created her enough space to get in a cross which found Beattie unmarked and she headed past Korpela.

A long ranger effort from Jane Ross soon put Scotland in the driving seat on 38 minutes before neat play from Leanne Ross found Beattie unmarked and she coolly slotted home to make it four one just before half time.

Scotland captain Gemma Fay was replaced at half time by Hibernian’s Shannon Lynn but it was Fay’s replacement as captain who extended Scotland’s lead after the break. The ball fell to Glasgow City midfielder Rachel Corsie on the edge of the Finland box and her looping volley deceived the goalie and drifted into the net.

Marianna Tolvanen scored Finland’s second goal of the game on 75 minutes but any glimmer of hope for Finland was extinguished less than a minute later with the second own goal of the game. Katri Nokso-Koivisto tried to roll the ball back to her goalkeeper but over hit her pass and, despite the best attempts of Korpela, restored Scotland’s five goal advantage.

Megan Sneddon nearly increased Scotland’s lead but was unlucky to see her vicious strike from 25 yards thunder off the Finland crossbar.

A second-half Linda Sällström goal saw Scotland slip to a narrow defeat in the first game of an international challenge match double-header.

Women's Scottish Cup Third Round Spartans 7 Buchan 1

11 September 2011

Spartans Progress to Quarter-Final

Spartans travelled to Fraserburgh for the previously postponed Scottish Cup tie with Buchan current second division leaders.

Spartans took five minutes to open the scoring, Barry switched the play from right to left finding Kirsty McLaughlin who floated the ball over McQuillan in the Buchan goal. In the sixteenth minute Barry beat her marker and cut back for Magilton to side foot home from six yards. Eight minutes later Magilton showed good footwork inside the box to keep possession only to be upended. Barry finishing the resultant penalty in the corner leaving the keeper no chance. The half-time score was 0-3.

Buchan started the second half with a renewed determination and had a go at Spartans which paid dividends when Duncan was played in on the left and beat Harrison at her near post. Buchan celebrated their goal against Premier opposition with gusto and no one could deny them their moment which was fully deserved. The goal sparked Spartans into life once again and they took control of the game. Crosbie's header from McLaughlin's corner re-instated Spartan's three goal advantage. Louise Young's pass across the face was dummied by Barry and slotted home by McKean. McKean then turned provider her shot was saved by McQuillan but the rebound was prodded home by Ewens. Spartans saved the best goal until five minutes from time a sweeping move involving Nicolson, McLaughlin, Young, Barry and finished first time by Ewens gave Spartans the 7-1 victory Buchan can be proud of their performance, they worked very hard throughout the ninety minutes, battled for every ball and tried their best to keep it when they had it. It is easy to see why they are top of their league and if they play as well as they did today they could give a lot of higher division teams a close game. In Sam McQuillan who only turned seventeen this week they have an excellent goalkeeper. Sam pulled off five outstanding saves, commanded her area throughout and kicked well. The result means Spartans will travel to Broxburn to meet Hibs in the next round.

Scottish Women's Premier League - Spartans 7 Inverness City 0

11 September 2011

Spartans win in the wind

Spartans welcomed Inverness City to the capital today for their second league meeting of the season.

Spartans started the game brightly and five minutes in McLaughlin released Clelland whose cross was only partially cleared by Alexander only for Barry (left) to smash the ball home from the edge of the box.

Spartans then scored five goals in an eighteen minute spell. Crosbie volleyed home after her header was cleared of the line.

Lauder was sent down the left by Ewens before cutting the ball back to Barry for a simple finish.

Lauder then turned from provider to scorer when Nicolson released her down the left cutting in and finishing across the keeper for a fine solo effort.

Next up was Ewens who was set up by Barry's slide rule pass, Ewens shot was parried by Jappy in the Inverness goal but was helped into the net with the strong wind.

Lauder then doubled her tally when Barry split the defence for Lauder to slot past the keeper. With the half-time score  6-0 to Spartans the game was all but finished as a contest. Spartans added a seventh as Barry jinked her way past a couple of defenders and round Jappy for her hat-trick. The strong wind spoiled the game for both sides but Spartans were pleased with the victory and clean sheet. The visitors would have been happy with their improved second-half performance if not the final score.  Click here for photo report

Scottish Women's Premier League - Forfar 0 Spartans 1

04 September 2011

Spartans Climb to third place

Spartans travelled to third place Forfar for the third meeting between the teams this season. Spartans, having won the two previous games in close contests, were aware how tough it would be to continue their undefeated record against Forfar.

Forfar were first to threaten when a cross from Webster found McCulley who shot wide. Ewens then pulled a great save out of Forfar keeper Cook. Barry then nodded through for Clelland who was foiled by Cook, before McLaughlin

then slipped a ball through for Barry who  pulled yet another good save from Cook who was having a good game between the Forfar posts. It was then Webster's turn to try her luck but cleared the bar from a free- kick. The score remained 0-0 at half-time.
In the second half play raged from end to end and the deadlock was eventually broken when the on form Forfar keeper rushed of her line and took Spartans striker Ewens clean out. Although it is not good to see players dismissed it appeared that the referee had no choice in this instance but to everyone's amazement he flashed only a yellow card. Barry stepped up and slotted home the penalty. The final thirty minutes provided chances for both sides but with no further scoring the three points were secured by Spartans. On the balance of play and the clearer chances created Spartans deserved their victory and climb to third in the league with Forfar dropping to fifth place.  Click here for photo report

Scottish Women's Premier League - Spartans 4 Hamilton 2

31 August 2011

Spartans Win at Home

Spartans welcomed Hamilton to the Academy for a league match. In the seventh minute Ewens used her pace to get on the end of  Lauder through ball and slotted past Fleming. Three minutes later and Spartans were two ahead when Clelland sent a ball over the Hamilton defence, Barry ran through and sent a thunderous shot which went in of the underside of the bar then the post. On the half hour mark Templeton poked a loose ball into the box and Fairlie reacted quickest to round Harrison and place the ball into the empty net and reduce Spartans lead. Ten minutes later Spartans scored twice within a minute. Firstly Clelland drove to the bye line and cut back to

Ewens who flicked the ball towards goal where Lauder finished from close range. Lauder then scored her second of the night when she capitalised on a defensive mistake to lift the ball over Fleming and give Spartans a 4-1 half time lead. The second half saw chances for both sides without either team finding the back of the net until three minutes from the end when Walker finished well from ten yards . Final score Spartans 4 Hamilton 2

The Braidwood Motor Company Stadium, Livingston

19 August 2011

Scotland U19's Prepare For September

Shelley Kerr’s side prepared for the UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship qualifiers with a comfortable win over Poland in Livingston.

The Scotland side, playing together for the first time at this age group, produced an assured performance, capped by four impressive goals.

Claire Emslie opened the scoring in just two minutes. Lana Clelland showed great awareness to switch play, picking out Emslie, who took a touch before unleashing her shot.

It was deep into the second half before Scotland struck again. Caroline Weir showed great individual skill, ghosting past four players before striking from the edge of the box.

Two minutes later Emslie grabbed her second, powering into the top corner after a quick counter-attack.
Captain Eilish McSorley wrapped up the win with five minutes to go, rising above the packed penalty box
Spartans Lana Clelland started the game  to bullet a header in at the back post.

Shelley Kerr said: “There were some great individual performances tonight, but the overall team performance was the most pleasing aspect for me. This is a new year group who’ve only had a few training sessions together, so I was delighted by such an organised and disciplined display.

“At 1-0 Poland had some chances to level the game, but defensively we were very strong, and there were a few well-timed tackles. We looked sharp going forward all night, and I was pleased that we managed to get more goals in the second half.

“We have some very young players in the squad, but there are also a few who have a lot of experience at this level, like our captain captain Eilish McSorley who led by example tonight.

“This kind of performance gives us confidence as a group as we prepare for the Euro qualifiers in September.”

Scotland travel to Finland to take on Faroe Islands, Belarus and Finland on 17, 19 and 22 September in the UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship first qualifying round.

Captain Eilish McSorley wrapped up the win with five minutes to go, rising above the packed penalty box to bullet a header in at the back post.

Scottish Women's Premier League - Rangers 2 Spartans 7

14 August 2011

Spartans Win Big in Glasgow

Spartans travelled to Glasgow, visitors of Rangers on league duty and left with all three points after a handsome victory. Ewens indicated her intentions when in the first minute she robbed McMaster and outpaced the Rangers defence only to see her lob clear the bar. Ewens then went one on one with Rangers keeper Hinde with the youngster doing well to smother the ball. Ewens then played a one two with Barry before slotting home into the right corner to put Spartans 1-0 ahead in the seventeenth minute. Five minutes later Rangers scored from their first shot on goal, Gallacher dispatching from the penalty spot after the referee adjudged that Scott had brought down Richards. Harrison then saved comfortably from a Docherty strike.

Spartans then went close again when Clelland hit the underside of the bar with the ball bouncing on the wrong side of the line. Spartans were determined to take a lead into the break and when Kirsty McLaughlin's shot rebounded from the bar Ewens was at hand to knock the ball into the net.
Spartans increased the tempo in the second half and within three minutes a Kirsty McLaughlin corner was headed home by Crosbie. Beveridge was then released by Barry but her shot on the angle was well saved by Hinde. With sixty minutes on the clock Magilton released Clelland who drove forward before squaring to Kirsty McLaughlin who picked her spot from ten yards to put Spartans 4-1 ahead. In the sixty third minute Rangers were awarded a free-kick which Marshall dispatched into Harrisons right hand corner courtesy of a deflection.
Kirsty McLaughlin then tried a cheeky lob from 45 yards after spotting Hinde of her line but her effort sailed agonisingly wide, Ewens then controlled the ball on her chest before prodding the ball inside the right post only for Hinde to tip the ball away for a corner. Spartans then increased their lead in the seventy seventh minute when Kirsty McLaughlin twisted one way then the other before firing an unstoppable left foot drive into the net from twenty yards to go 5-2 ahead. Mason replaced Clelland and was soon in the action, Beveridge playing a perfect ball over the top of the Rangers defence for Mason to run onto and lob the outrushing Hinde. To cap of the scoring the excellent Kirsty McLaughlin picked up Hinde's clearance and returned the ball over the back pedalling keeper into the net to make it 7-2 and secure an emphatic victory.
