Scottish Women's Premier League - Hutchison Vale 1 Spartans 1

29 May 2011

Spartans leave it too late

Spartans met Hutchison Vale in the Edinburgh derby and had to be satisfied with a share of the points. Spartans never really got going in the first half and were punished early in the second when Hutchison Vale broke down the right and whipped a ball into the middle for the on rushing Russell to slip the ball past Harrison. Spartans equalised through a Crosbie (left) header. Spartans eventually sparked into life in the last fifteen minutes of the game and put Vale under constant pressure however Vale defended well and in the end couldn't be denied their first point of the season.

Spartans well beaten in cup final

Spartans met Hibs in the final of the league cup at Recreation Park, Alloa. Despite taking a third minute lead through Hayley Lauder (left) who looped a header over Lynn, it was the West Lothian side who scored four goals in a twelve minute spell in the first half to all but the bury the tie. Three headers from Ross, Thompson and Crichton followed by Ross's side foot finish did the damage. Spartans played much better in the second period and reduced the deficit through Kirsty McLaughlin before Ex-Spartan McWhinnie scored to extinguish any glimmer of hope Spartans had of making a come back.

Scottish Women's Premier League - Glasgow City 5 Spartans 1

EVANS ABOVE SPARTANS

Spartans travelled west to league leaders Glasgow City and were demolished by a top display from City's Lisa Evans. Evans claimed a hat-rick to sink a lack-lustre Spartans. Spartans were without the injured Kirsty Hamilton and Molly McKean, with Kirsty McLaughlin and Ashley Nicolson unavailable and captain Lou Young only fit for a place on the bench Debbi McCulloch had to re-shuffle her side. With a strong wind against Spartans in the first half two goals by the impressive Evans put City in the driving seat however Spartans reduced the deficit through a well taken Di Barry goal before half-time. With the wind behind Spartans in the 2nd half and a bright opening ten minutes Spartans were hopeful of getting back into the game however Evans third goal on the break seemed to deflate Spartans. Jane Ross added a forth for City with Barry smacking the crossbar with a free-kick. Barry then had to go off after taking a ball square in the face, Spartans having used both subs saw out the match with ten players. Love scored a fifth for city in the dying minutes.

SPARTANS WIN AGAIN

Spartans travelled North to Inverness with a depleted squad through injury and suspension, with only ten available outfield players at that start, Debbi McCulloch didn't have a selection headache. Despite this Spartans took the lead after ten minutes, Lauder crossed from the bye line and McLean finished first time from four yards. In the second half Mclean was taken down from behind in the box. Lauder fired home the penalty on the hour mark. In the eighty forth minute McLean who was involved in all three goals shot from fully thirty yards, Jappy in the Inverness goal could only parry her shot, Ewens reacted quickest and slotted home the rebound. With the win Spartans remain unbeaten and move up one place to forth in the Premier League.

SPARTANS REMAIN UNBEATEN

Spartans welcomed Forfar to the Academy for the second time this season a close 3-2 victory for Spartans in the league cup game suggested that it would be another close game and that is what it was in the end. Spartans took a first half lead courtesy of a Ewens finish before a Lauder cut back was bundled into the net by a Forfar player for an OG. After the break Ralph pulled one back before Lauder scored the goal of the game driving from half way into the box and slotting the ball home into the far corner. Forfar pulled it back to 3-2 with a McCulley header before Trisha McLaughlin prodded home to restore Spartans two goal cushion. Hughes then scored Forfar's third before the end.
