Spartans 4 Falkirk 0

Spartans welcomed Falkirk to the Academy for the second time this season having played a cup match in March. This time it was league duty and Spartans took all three points after a comfortable victory.
Star of the show was midfielder Katie Reilly who scored a hatrick, a header and a placed shot in the first half and a second header midway through the second half. Alana Marshall chipped in with a strike to seal the victory for the home side. Match Report to follow.

Spartans U17 played host to Forfar Real Farmington in treacherous conditions on Sunday with the home side going down 6-1 at Ainslie Park.

Spartans, having lost the toss, started the game against the wind and were a goal down inside five minutes as Forfar’s Katy Dickson found the back of the net. No sooner had the visitors got their opener they struck again, getting three goals through Lyndsey Dunbar (2) and Laura Parsley. Spartans were struggling to deal with the Forfar’s attack with the back four being stretched by the pace of play and the awful conditions. However the home side did manage to pull a goal back through a Sophie Cunningham strike after the striker managed to get onto a through ball.

However the respite for Spartans was short lived as Forfar’s Murron White scored their fifth just before the end of the first half.

Spartans started the second half much stronger and with the wind at their backs created several chances but were unable to convert them. The visitors sealed the 6-1 victory with Chloe Dunn putting the ball into the back of the net.

There was no senior football this weekend with the National Team in friendly action at East End Park, Dunfermline where goals from Jane Ross and Emma Mitchell were enough to give Scotland a 2-1 win. The U19's beat Ukraine 4-2 on Saturday in a European 2nd stage qualifier.

The Spartans under 11 team meanwhile travelled to Murieston and had great fun and a fabulous performance. Here are the girls and coaches pictured at the game. Thanks to Murieston for making us welcome.

In the U15's South East League Cup a Sophie Cunningham goal was not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat to Falkirk Girls.

Spartans Stay Alert

Spartans Rachel Harrison and Alert Goalkeeping have teamed up for the second season in succession meaning the specialist designer and supplier of gloves will continue to help keep the ball out of the Spartans net.

Alert was established in 2011 by Willie Spence, the son of former Queens Park, Falkirk, Clydebank and Ayr United Keeper Billy Spence, to provide a uniquely designed glove that was previously unavailable on the market. Willie himself has played in goals for

many years and after wearing several different brands and types of glove he realised that nothing was helping him keep goal as much as he would like. As such he has designed a glove that he believes is the best on the market and with the company growing as much as it has in the two years he is not alone in that thinking. Continue Reading

Scotland Call for Spartans

By Edmund Brown

A trio of Spartans players have been rewarded for their impressive performances over the last twelve months with the inclusion in the Scotland National Training Camp.

Spartans Players Player of the Year Rachel Harrison (left), midfielder Alana Marshall (right) and the returning Kirsty McLaughlin (centre) have all been included in Anna Signeul’s 28 women training squad being held next weekend ahead of the friendly on the 9th of February against the USA.

Goalkeeper Rachel Harrison was delighted to see her name included in the squad and believes that this rewards her for her hard work during the 2012 campaign. She said: “I’m so excited and honoured to be included in the squad. I felt that 2012 was a great season for me personally and this inclusion, together with the recent award from my colleagues at Spartans, has topped off a great year for me.”

Midfielder Alana Marshall was also overjoyed to be included in the squad, “I got a text message on Wednesday from my Manager Debbi McCulloch congratulating me on my inclusion,” says Marshall. “I had no idea and it wasn’t until later on that I read the email confirming my place. I can’t wait to be a part of the squad again and I will go in trying to showcase my abilities and skills.”

Spartans Manager Debbi McCulloch feels that the inclusion of these top players is a great achievement for the club. She said: “I’m absolutely delighted for these three players who all had great seasons last year. Rachel’s performances were top class in goals last year as were Alana’s after joining from Rangers. Kirsty spent a season at Hibs last year and was brilliant in their midfield hence why we were determined to re-sign her. Not only is this a fantastic reward for these three players but it’s great for the younger players to see the achievements made by their peers and hopefully  they can aspire towards this in the years to come.”
