SCOTTISH WOMENS FOOTBALL LEAGUE SOUTH EAST REGION SPARTANS B  6 SPARTANS C  1

15 August 2010

A win for Spartans B would see them sit a single point behind third place in the league where as a win for Spartans C would be revenge for the 3-2 defeat they suffered at the hands of the Bs earlier in the season.

The game started like any derby does with both teams desperate to draw first blood. Spartans C started very brightly with centre forward Ashley Strachan latching on to a half chance in the box only to see it trundle through to Bs keeper Stephanie Ireland.

SPARTANS B MEET SPARTANS C FOR THE FIRST TIME

   28 March 2010

A little piece of history was made yesterday down at the Academy when two Spartan's women's teams, Spartans B and Spartans C met for the very first time in a competitive match.

Spartans B came out on top with a 3-2 victory in a close game. Spartans C team are a very young team who put in a good performance against their more experienced opponents.

With the score finally poised at 2-1 to the B's at half-time, they extended their lead to 3-1 before the C's narrowed the gap to one goal, setting up a tense finish.

Spartans C 1 East Fife 5

Spartans C team take to the pitch.

It was a proud afternoon for Spartans girls/ladies football when the newly formed C team took to the pitch for their first match against East Fife.

The C team was set up to keep players of U17 and U19 age level in the game.  There weren’t enough of each age group to make their own youth teams so they took the brave step up to the ladies league.

Despite coming up against a very experienced team who finished mid way in the league last season the team gave a great account of themselves.  After losing an early goal the team settled and began to adapt to the pace and physicality of the ladies league.  A momentary lack of concentration in defence at a corner resulted in the visitors’ second goal.  On several occasions Spartans ran through on goal and were unlucky not to convert these chances into a goal.  It remained two nil at half time.

Following the break Spartans quickly got into their game and after a good passing move down the right Eve Cummings controlled the ball before shooting low into the bottom corner of the net.  Spartans C team deservedly celebrated their first goal together.

As the game progressed the opposition put the ball in the net twice only for the goals to be ruled off side.  Spartans replied with several penetrating passes beating the defence and leaving an attacker running through on goal.  Again it was unfortunate that none of these resulted in goals.

Towards the end of the game the experience of the opposition led to a couple more goals.  The final result was a 5-1 win to East Fife.

This was a hard first match for the C team but they can only take away positives from the game.  They are worthy members of the ladies league and this season will just add to their skill, making them stronger, more formidable players for the future.
