17 MARCH 2010          SPARTANS 5 RANGERS 2
:

On Wednesday night Spartans entertained Rangers in the League Cup Quarter Finals. On paper it looked as though it would be a close match but surprisingly with so much at stake the game was open and certainly entertaining.

Spartans, kicking into the wind in the first half were first on the attack and after 6 mins Sarah Ewens had the first chance, firing narrowly over after creating space for herself. The game then settled down for the next 15 mins with nothing of note apart from a left foot shot from Hamill that was well blocked by McMaster. The game sprung into life on 24 mins a free kick from Hamill was won at the back post by Faughnan and her knock down was controlled and expertly finished by Barry. Good work by Ewens after 35 mins resulted in Hamill flighting the ball to the back post where it was met by Melrose whose shot came back off the right hand post. The half ended with Spartans on top but Rangers still looking dangerous on the break.

The 2nd half kicked off with Rangers forcing the pace to try and get back into the game but within 10 minutes of the restart two pieces of brilliance by Hamill sealed the game for Spartans. The first after 53 minutes was a brilliant left foot shot from 25 yards and then 3 minutes later she planted a great 22 yard free kick into the bottom corner. Rangers fought hard and a great run from Cleland which took her round Harrison in the Spartans goal ended with her shooting into the side netting. Spartans should have added to their tally when Hamill had the chance to score her first Spartans hat trick but her shot was well saved by Cook. The inevitable 4th goal arrived 2 minutes later though when Barry pounced on a short pass back to round Cook and tap into an empty net. Spartans were well on top now and Lauder hit the bar. Just when it looked like Spartans were going to increase their lead Rangers grabbed a lifeline back into the game, a great run by Docherty ended with her beating Harrison from 20 yards with a great left foot shot. Spartans increased their lead again with a fine Scott finish after 85 mins and in the dying moments of the game Somerville was booked for persistent fouling then got a straight red for dissent towards the referee. The final play of the game saw Louise Mason grab a consolation for Rangers with a fine right foot shot.

In cup games the main objective is to win through to the next round, Spartans achieved this with a bit to spare and progressed into the Semi Finals where they have been drawn to meet Inverness.
