SCOTLAND v SWITZERLAND - International Challenge - McDiarmid Park - Perth - Wednesday 17th. September 2008
SCOTLAND 4 - 0 SWITZERLAND
A comfortable 4-0 for Scotland Women was the ideal
preparation for the crucial Euro qualifier against Slovakia at the end of the
month.
Two first half goals from captain Julie Fleeting, plus second half strikes from
Kirsty McBride and Kim Little secured the win at McDiarmid Park.
Scotland dominated the game from the outset, pinning Switzerland back into their
own half for much of the first 45 minutes.
Fleeting shook off her recent injury worries and proved a handful for the Swiss
defence, forcing keeper Marisa Brunner into action a number of times.
The breakthrough came in the 27th minute, when Scotland won a free kick on the
edge of the box, and the captain stepped up to curl the ball into the top
corner.
The lead was doubled just nine minutes later, when defender Jennifer Beattie
went on a mazy run through the Swiss midfield, providing a low cross to
Fleeting, who slotted home from close range.
Scotland continued to press forward in the second half, with Leanne Ross sending
a free kick just wide, and Fleeting drawing another save from Brunner within 15
minutes of the restart.
Switzerland rarely troubled the Scottish defence, with goalie Gemma Fay making
her first save at the feet of Martina Moser in 81 minutes.
Michelle Kerr had a goal chopped off in 85 minutes, but the third came just two
minutes later. Little outpaced the Swiss defence to send in a low cross from the
left, finding substitute Kirsty McBride, who lobbed the ball high into the net.
Little got a goal of her own two minutes from time when she raced clear in the
middle of the park, and rounded the goalkeeper to fire low into the bottom
corner.
Scotland now face Slovakia at McDiarmid Park on 28th September, in a game which
they must win to secure a place in the play-offs of the UEFA European
Championship for the first time.
