SCOTLAND v SLOVAKIA - UEFA EUROPEAN QUALIFIER - McDiarmid Park - Perth - Sunday 28th. September 2008

SCOTLAND 6 - 0 SLOVAKIA

Scorers :- Beattie, Fleeting (2), Hamill, Little, Grant

Scotland Women's A Squad today made history this afternoon at McDiarmid Park with a win against Slovakia, meaning that Scotland have won a play off spot for the UEFA European Championships in Finland next summer.

After Russia’s 4-1 win over Poland last night Scotland went into the game knowing that a win would take them into the play-offs of a major tournament for the first time, and they started the game with purpose, enjoying the bulk of the first half possession.

Celtic’s Jennifer Beattie opened the scoring in the 26th minute when her floated cross just missed the head of Arsenal’s Kim Little but sailed past Lenka Gazdikova in the Slovakian goal.

Falling behind seemed to kick-start the Slovakian attack, and they enjoyed their best spell of the game, forcing a sting of saves from Gemma Fay.

But Scotland quickly found their rhythm once more, with captain Julie Fleeting deftly lobbing the goalkeeper just after the half hour mark after some great link up play between Kim Little and Leanne Ross.

Just seven minutes later Pauline Hamill made it three when she met a long ball out of the defence from Spartans’ Michelle Kerr to lob the ‘keeper once more.

After the break Scotland kept up the tempo, with Little taking charge of the midfield. And the player of the match grabbed a goal of her own on 51 minutes when she unleashed a low shot into the bottom corner.

Little was involved in the 5th goal when her free kick was met by Arsenal teammate Fleeting who fired home for her second of the game.

Fleeting’s day was soured soon after when she picked up a hotly contested yellow card, which could rule her out of the first play-off match.

Substitute Suzanne Grant wrapped up a memorable win in the 86th minute with a fine strike which left Gazdikova with no chance.

Head coach Anna Signeul said: “I’m delighted with what was an excellent all round team performance, and I was particularly happy to see goals coming from all over the pitch. Slovakia are a strong side but our attacking play was really exceptional today. Of course that kind of performance comes from having fit, hardworking players all over the pitch.

“We’ve made a bit of history today and the players and everyone associated with the team are over the moon. If we work as hard as we did today I think we have a good chance against anyone we might face in the play-offs.”

Scotland are through to the UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifying play-offs after striking six without reply against Slovakia.

Victory enough
Although a draw would have been enough for Scotland to ensure a top-three finish in Group 5, only a victory would have ensured their record was good enough to earn a two-legged tie next month as one of the four third-placed teams with the best record against the top quartet in their section across the six pools. And three goals in each half ensured Scotland will be drawn against one of the group runners-up on 6 October.

Fleeting double
Jennifer Beattie put Scotland into a 25th-minute lead when her cross evaded the head of Kim Little but sailed past Slovakia goalkeeper Lenka Gazdíková. Despite a good response from the visitors, just past the half-hour Julie Fleeting headed a second goal following good work from Little and Leanne Ross. Pauline Hamill's lob over Gazdíková made it 3-0 at the break after she latched on to a Michelle Kerr clearance. Not long after half-time Kim Little added to the scoreline with a low shot, fine reward for a busy performance in midfield. A Little free-kick was turned in by Fleeting and substitute Suzanne Grant completed the scoring late on.

'Over the moon'
Scotland manager Anna Signeul said: "We've made a bit of history today and the players and everyone associated with the team are over the moon. If we work as hard as we did today I think we have a good chance against anyone we might face in the play-offs." While Scotland can now look ahead to a possible debut in a senior women's finals, Slovakia have the consolation that their six-point tally is the highest of any of the five sides who progressed from the preliminary round to main qualifying.
