Germany, who are hoping to
win the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship for a fifth time in Iceland
this July, will begin the 2007/08 edition against Wales, the Czech Republic and
F.Y.R. Macedonia after the first qualifying round draw was made in Nyon,
Switzerland.
German opponents
Forty-four nations are hoping to earn one of seven available final round places
alongside hosts France, winners of this competition in 2003. While the current
holders will be in F.Y.R. Macedonia for their Group 9 mini-tournament from 27
September-2 October, the previous champions Russia welcome Italy, Israel and
Northern Ireland. Spain, winners in 2004, meet England, Lithuania and the Faroe
Islands in Group 10 and two 2006 qualifiers, Denmark and Belgium, are in Group 6
along with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Latvia.
Icelandic task
Iceland, who will stage the 2006/07 competition - for which the second
qualifying round is played in April - will begin the next competition in Group 1
against home team Portugal, Greece and Romania. The top two teams from each
group go into the second qualifying round along with the two third-place
finishers with the best record against the leading pair in their pool.
