Scotland u19 UEFA Championship 2007-8 :-
SCOTLAND U19 BEAT THE GREAT DANES TO QUALIFY FOR EURO CHAMPIONSHIP IN FRANCE
Tuesday, 29 Apr 2008
Scotland U19 Women were triumphant over Denmark in their final Group 4 qualification match of the U19 European Women’s Championship Elite stage here in Switzerland tonight, when they won 2-1.
The Scots went into the game with great pressure, knowing their qualification to the finals in France was dependant on gaining three points from this match, Denmark only needed a draw to qualify.
It was the Danes who went ahead after only 6 minutes with Lise Overgaard Munk scoring an early goal to settle the Danish nerves. Their lead was cancelled out in 13 minutes when Scotland’s Jane Ross fired home the equaliser.
A fantastic performance by the Scots against an experienced and talented Denmark side saw them take the lead toward the end of the game when Christie Murray put Scotland into the final stages of the competition with her goal in 84th minutes.
Scotland endured further pressure in the closing minutes of the game, but managed to hold out for a glorious victory.
Ritchie Wilson Head Coach said ‘This is a fantastic achievement for the players and staff. We knew going into the game that we were here looking to take the three points, it’s a wonderful feeling having done so. We look forward to France in July and pitching ourselves up against the best in Europe.’
The 2007/08 UEFA European Women''s Championship final tournament will be held in France in the towns of Amboise, Avoine, Blois, Romorantin, Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire, Tours and Vineuil – the first six of which were also the venues for the well-attended 2003/04 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. Scotland drew 2-2 with hosts Switzerland in their 2nd match in the 2nd Phase of the European Championships.
It was a close fought, physical match. There were not many clear cut goal scoring opportunities in the first half but the Swiss team scored after an hour making the half time score 1-0.
The second half followed a similar pattern and the Scots equalised with 9 minutes to go only to lose a penalty 4 minutes later. But the Scots didn't give up and Ruesha Littlejohn scored deep into injury time making the final score 2-2.
Scotland now face Denmark, who have picked up maximim points from their first 2 games, in their final game on Tuesday at 7pm local time to see who will progress to the finals in July in France.

The Swiss u19 team under coach Luca Balduzzi began the game well and went into a 31st. minute lead with a goal from Crnogorcevic. In the second half the game became more even. Corsie equalised for the Scots in the 81st. minute. Four minutes from time Jehona Mehmeti converted a penalty to put the Swiss back in the lead and what should have been victory – however, it was not enough as in injury time Littlejohn scored to secure a point for the Scots. Qualification for the Swiss is now very difficult following their opening match defeat against Denmark. From the six groups only the group winners and best second placed team will qualify which means the Scots must defeat the Danes in their last game of the group.
