RAITH ROVERS v HIBERNIAN - S.W.P.L. - Sunday 24th. May 2009

Raith Rovers 1 - 2 Hibernian Ladies

Hibs travelled to Fife to take on a home side that were battling relegation. With Vicki Whitelaw ruled out through injury youngster Kirsten Weir was given a start having previously appeared as a substitute in previous matches.

Hibs first chance of the game came after 15 minutes when Joelle Murray crossed from the right wing and Laura Kennedy only just failed to connect with the ball in front of goal. The game was held up just on the half hour mark when referee Kirsty Morgan had to be treated for an ankle injury and when she could not continue one of her assistants had to take over refereeing duties.  Once the game restarted Frankie Brown went close to opening the scoring heading the ball toward goal following a corner kick but her effort was cleared off the line. Just before half time Kirsty McBride surged up the left wing and squared the ball to Stacey Cook but the midfielder’s shot was deflected just wide of goal.

With three minutes of the second half on the clock Hibs survived a scare when Gemma Fay failed to hold a cross under pressure but the Scotland International goalkeeper managed to recover at the second attempt. Hibs kept pressing for the opener and went close when Mandy Burns volleyed a Kirsty McBride shot only to see her effort deflected wide for a corner. Hibs eventually opened the scoring in the 62nd minute as Hayley Cunningham surged through from midfield and shot under the keeper into the bottom corner. Play was held up for some minutes when Gemma Fay received treatment for a facial injury after a clash in the box but fortunately for Hibs their goalkeeper was able to continue. When play resumed Hayley Cunningham crossed for Frankie Brown in the middle and the defender was unlucky to see her chip shot go over the bar. Raith equalised in the 71st minute when LAURA WHEATLEY found herself in space and poked the ball past Fay. Hibs regained their lead shortly after though as Joelle Murray’s cross was touched on by Laura Kennedy in the box and LISA ROBERTSON was on hand to tap the ball in.
