RAITH ROVERS v FORFAR FARMINGTON LADIES - S.W.P.L. - Sunday 9th. November 2008
Raith 2 v Forfar 2
Raith snatched a point from this fixture with a goal in the dying seconds of the game, leaving a frustrated Forfar to rue squandering a two goal lead, the numerous opportunities missed and their failure to put the game beyond Raith who to their credit battled in the final 20 minutes for an unlikely draw when 2-1 down and reduced to 10 players.
Played on yet another pitch better suited to mud wrestling the prospect of developing a meaningful passing game was pretty well non-existent.Forfar playing with the slope made the best of the difficult conditions forcing a series of corners throughout the half only to find it awkward to lift the ball head high into the area. What breaks Forfar made usually resulted in long range shots, the strikers not confident the ball would not get stuck behind when dribbling anywhere near the penalty area. Avril Gourlay, Nicola Davidson, Emily Phillips, Caren Webster and Emma Percy all saw their efforts go wide or gathered comfortably by the Raith keeper, who sensed few would venture anywhere near her goal without a map showing the route through the quagmire.Forfar finally got a break minutes before half time when Alana Bruce was taken out needlessly by a Raith defender, Clare Galloway scoring from the spot.
Half Time 1-0
The second half took on a familiar pattern, both sides trying to move the ball wide to the less treacherous areas of the pitch, and when this was managed the occasional pass was noted. But for the most, lumping the ball up field when possible was the preferred option.
Forfar extended their lead in the 55th minute with a move involving 4 players! Kim Thompson from right back found Alana Bruce out wide on firmer ground who crossed to Caren Webster who in turn played it on to Emily Phillips to score from close in.Within a minute of scoring Raith had reduced the deficit, Lisa McKenzie getting on the end of a pass from wide right following Forfar’s loss of possession in the middle of the park when the ball failed to reach an intended receiver, getting stuck in the mud.
Forfar continued to press, only to see Raith scramble the ball off the line on one occasion and see further scoring chances go a begging. When Raith were reduced to 10 players with some 15 minutes to go it looked as though Forfar would add to their lead. However, Raith refused to yield. In the final seconds of the match they forced a corner. Not only was the ball miraculously well delivered into the 6 yard area, Liz Anderson then met it perfectly and headed home powerfully leaving a stunned Forfar to traipse back to the centre spot and hear the final whistle.
