Newburgh v Glasgow City - Premier League - Tuesday 15 May 2007
Glasgow City maintained a little pressure on League leaders Hibernian on Tuesday night after their 1-0 win over Newburgh. With only three league games left to go, Hibs are five points clear and although City and Hibernian have still to meet on the last day of the season, Captain Laura Montgomery knows the chances of the Edinburgh side slipping up elsewhere are slim. She said, “I don’t expect Hibs to drop any points before we play them again, but we need to finish our own season as strongly as we can. Tonight’s match against Newburgh wasn’t great if I am honest. We had a few players out, but overall, it was a typical end of season affair. I am sure most of the players had one eye on the cup final on Sunday and the most important thing tonight was simply to win.”
The City victory came courtesy of a strike from top goalscorer Katharina Lindner at the start of the second half, much to the relief of Manager Peter Caulfield. He said, “We dominated the first period, but again couldn’t convert our possession and chances into goals. But I knew as soon as we did finally score, it would be very difficult for Newburgh to get back into the game.”
