Newburgh v ELFC - Premier League - Sunday 5th. October 2006
Newburgh entertained cup finalists Edinburgh City in an important league game for both sides.Newburgh made some changes to the starting line up Laura Smith returned from suspension, Anne Houliston made her home debut and Di Fraser made her first start of the season.
Edinburgh started the game on the offensive and it was apparent that they were playing with confidence. Newburgh were content to allow Edinburgh to dictate possession whilst maintaining control of the game. The Burgh went ahead through Leanne Ross who brilliantly volleyed the ball beyond the City goalkepper from 30 yards.
Burgh extended thier lead following a break down the left hand side which culminated in Kirky bearing down on the City goalkeeper before being brought down in the act of shooting. Erika Duncan duly netted the resultant penalty.
Edinburgh were rocked further when Di Fraser headed home a well worked set piece.
To their credit Edinburgh kept plugging away and were rewarded with a well taken goal by McWhinnie from the edge of the box.
The game was turned on it's head when Edinburgh scored again, this time following great play in the wide area and an excellent cross ball superbly headed home by Crichton via the cross bar. Burgh remained dangerous on the counter attack and passed up the chance to stretch their lead with Erika Duncan firing just over the bar when through on goal.
It was all Edinburgh now and Newburgh were relieved to hear the half time whistle blow.
HALF TIME 3-2 TO THE BURGH!!!!!
In the first minute of the second half Laura Williamson made an excellent save to ensure the status quo remained. However, this proved to be Edinburgh's only attempt on target until injury time. Newburgh controlled the second half with the defence in particular dominating the attack force of the opponents. Midway through the second half Burgh stretched their lead through Emma Lyons following another well worked set piece. The coup de grace was applied by home debutant Anne Houliston who fired home the fifth from the edge of the box. By now Edinburgh were a dispirited and a disjointed team and this led to the sending off of Crichton. Following the introduction of Fyfe, Brown and Gemmel Newburgh carved another opportunity which Gemmel contrived to miss. Shortly after the referee blew his whistle to conclude the match.
Great to see the mentality back that we have worked so hard to get at this club this season. Some great performances although it should be stressed that this was an excellent team performance against a very impressive side. Well done girls.
