Inverness LFC 3-0 Vale of Clyde

Inverness Ladies clinched the Scottish League Cup amidst scenes of great jubilation at McDiarmid Park last weekend. Cheered on by a large and noisy support the women were determined there would be no repeat of the heartache suffered in the final of two years ago when they were beaten in extra time.

After a fairly cagey start from both sides Leanne Calder was fouled some 25 yards from goal in the 14th minute and left back Claire Masterton stepped up and blasted the free kick high into the net for a spectacular opening goal.

Lorraine Cadden and Sarah Main both came close to adding to the lead but the Highland side had keeper Kim Jappy to thank for a couple of good saves as Clyde chased an equaliser.
The second half saw Inverness begin to dominate with Cadden and Main creating havoc on the flanks and Karen Mason charging through the middle with Calder’s trickery on the ball saw Clyde on the back foot for long spells.

The second goal came on 65mins when Calder beat the keeper with another blistering strike and the cup was secured with 8mins left when Calder swept home another perfect Cadden cross. Leanne Calder won the player of the match award but the entire Inverness team played their part in a well deserved victory.

A delighted team coach Sandy Corcoran said “I am really pleased for the players, all 17 of them have played their part in this cup success and my assistant Louise Cadden and myself cannot praise them highly enough for such a professional performance. We would both like to thank the large travelling support for their backing on the day."

Team :-

SWFL LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINALS RESULTS

The SWFL league cup semi-finals took place Sunday 15th Oct with both favourites marching through to the final.

Inverness progressed to their second League Cup Final in three years with a hard fought victory over Queens Park last weekend.

In a fairly even first half chances were few and far between but Inverness took the lead on 29mins when the impressive Leanne Calder was impeded in the box and Karen Mason slammed home the resultant penalty kick.

The second half saw both teams create chances before the Highland side stretched their advantage on 69mins when Calder lost her marker and beat the keeper with a fine shot. Inverness continued to press forward and on 75mins Calder swept home a cross from Lorraine Cadden to make it 3-0 but Queens Park pulled a goal back within a minute and added another in injury time but Inverness ran out deserved winners.

In the other semi Vale of Clyde ran out comfortable 8-3 winnners over Dunfermline goals from Carolyn McIntyre, Bernie McNulty and Lisa Montgomery gave The Vale a 3-2 lead at half-time with Suzanne Duncan scoring two for Dunfermline but a second half goal avalanche from the Vale of Clyde tied the game up goals coming from Bridie McDonald, Laura Stevenston, two from Lauren Strachan and Bernie Mcnulty wrapped it all up with a stunner to make it 8.

The league cup final will take place Sat 28th, October at McDiarmid Park Perth - 2PM kick -off.

Vale of Clyde are managed by the SWL Fixture Co-ordinator Davie Mark, whose efforts for the development

of the women’s game in Scotland could perhaps be rewarded in the final with a victory for his team. Vale of Clyde (formerly Clyde L.F.C.) have been at the top of the SWFL for a while now with sojourns into the SWPL. They gained promotion last year to the SWPL but considered that their squad was too young and inexperienced to compete in the Premier League, so opted to decline the well earned promotion for a further year of consolidation in the SWFL.

Inverness Ladies F.C. managed by Sandy Corcoran, were finalists two years ago and Sandy would dearly love for his team to go one better today. The club and management team cannot be praised to highly for their attitude as they compete each season by travelling long distances to away matches and, in the eyes of the SWFL, are an exemplary club for all other clubs to admire.

  • Inverness LFC will meet Vale of Clyde in the first final the season at McDiarmid Park, Perth on Saturday 28th October 2006, with a 2pm kick-off. Thirty seven teams commenced on the cup trial culminating in Inverness Ladies F.C. appearing in their second final in three years, playing Vale of Clyde winners three years ago, in what has already been billed as the "friendly final".

Vale of Clyde L.F.C. from Glasgow, are no strangers to the latter stages of cup competitions and Inverness Ladies F. C. are rapidly making a name for themselves as a successful cup team. Vale of Clyde are in the process of rebuilding their squad with younger players and look to have got the right formula by reaching the final, whereas Inverness have had a regular squad for some time now and are benefiting from the development work put in over the past few years.

Alan Gemmill form Tillicoultry will referee the match assisted by John Russell and Terry Donnelly. The fourth official today will be one of the newly qualified referees, Karen McGowan.
