 HIBERNIAN v HAMILTON - S.W.P.L. - Sunday 5th. April 2009

Hibs Ladies Take The Points

Hibernian Ladies bounced back from two defeats to claim a narrow victory over Hamilton Academical Ladies at the weekend. A second half strike from Stacey Cook was enough to seal victory for the Edinburgh side against stubborn opponents.

Rebecca Zoltie and Louise Mason from the Girls’ U17 team were promoted into the senior side – a reward for their excellent performances this season. Another youngster, Ellen Pia, was also due to play at the weekend however she picked up an unfortunate injury when with the Scotland U17 side.

Hibernian got the game underway and they retained possession well in the strong blustery conditions. The Edinburgh side almost opened the scoring early on when Joelle Murray broke the Hamilton offside trap and knocked the ball beyond the advancing goalkeeper however she was off target on this occasion.

Hamilton to their credit were well organised, particularly in defence, and they were limiting Hibernian to very few clear goal scoring opportunities. Then midway through the first half, both teams were reduced to ten players. Joelle Murray appeared to be struck in the face as she was getting up from a challenge as players from both teams clashed.

The red card’s appeared to affect Hibernian more than their opponents and the home side had goalkeeper Gemma Fay to thank for keeping them level a couple of super stops as Hamilton created chances on the counter attack.

In the second half Hibernian began to take a stranglehold on the midfield and as a result they were creating chances galore. Only poor finishing stopped prevented Hibernian from finding the net on a number of occasions.

Hibernian eventually made the breakthrough when Stacey Cook converted a penalty kick after Hamilton were penalised for handball in the penalty area. Before the full time Hibernian had other chances to increase their lead but in the end the one goal was enough to see them pick full points on a tricky surface.
