Ladies fine start continues

Hibernian Ladies maintained their 100% start to the season with a convincing with over Aberdeen Ladies at the weekend. The Edinburgh girls 5-1 victory was thoroughly deserved and with the two teams set to clash in the Premier League Cup in a couple of weeks, the result could give Hibernian the psychological edge.

Goals from new recruit Alana Marshall, a double from Laura Kennedy and a goal each from Hayley Cunningham and Joelle Murray completed a handsome win for Hibernian, in a game that many expected to be an evenly fought contest.

image "I think we ran out comfortable winners but we took time to settle in the difficult weather conditions." Reflected Hibernian coach Jimmy Burns. "We knew this game would be a test given Aberdeen's recent good results but we tried to impose ourselves on the match right from the start and again created a lot of goal scoring opportunities.

"With the wind at our backs in the first half we did not have the fluency in possession we are looking for, our passes were frequently over-hit and the strong wind did not help. We looked good going forward at times playing quick passes but all too often our play broke down due to poor passing or a heavy touch.

"When Alana Marshall got our first goal on the half hour mark I thought we would go on from there, however Aberdeen came back and through sloppy play in the defence they scored a deserved equaliser. This galvanised the team and Laura Kennedy restored our just before half time with a good poacher's goal following in from a goalkeeping mishandle.

"At half time we took time to make a tactical change in emphasis and from the start of the second half we dominated the game and went on to play some exciting, fast, passing football. Three further goals in the second half saw us run out comfortable winners in the end and keeps the momentum going."

On Wednesday evening Hibernian face another tough match – this time against city rivals Spartans. Hibernian failed to come out on top in any of their games with Spartans last season and will looking on this clash as an ideal opportunity to correct that poor record.

Jimmy commented: "We will continue to play our open attractive football whoever we play and look forward with confidence to Wednesday's game with Spartans. This will be a very difficult game for us because Spartans are a top team, who are well coached and motivated to beat us, however it is a game that can't come quick enough for the players and as always we will go there to win playing fast, attacking football."
