HAMILTON v SPARTANS - S.W.P.L. - Tuesday 19th. May 2009

 Spartans Take Over At Top

Spartans have taken over the leadership of the Scottish Women's Premier League following a
5-1 victory away to Hamilton Academicals.

The unbeaten Edinburgh side had a game in hand on the top two going into the match and took full advantage despite the half time scoreline being goalless.

Debbie McWhinnie opened the scoring for Spartans within a minute of the restart and Diana Barry extended their lead midway through the second half. Sarah Crilly briefly gave Hamilton hope by pulling a goal back but Claire Crosbie quickly restored the two-goal advantage before Barry went on to crown the victory with two more to complete her hat-trick.

This means that Spartans now head the table by a single point from both Glasgow City and Celtic, each side having two games left to play. Sunday is set to be a crucial day in the fascinating title race with Glasgow playing host to Spartans whilst Celtic are away to FC Kilmarnock.

A Spartans victory would end the chances of reigning Champions City - who would return to the top with a win - but a draw would let in Celtic, for whom a three-point haul would put them into the driving seat going into the last weekend.
