Hamilton 0 - 1 Dundee United

Dundee United recorded there first win of the season with a 1-0 away victory to established Women’s Premier League Outfit Hamilton Accies.

After being knocked out of the League Cup last week by Celtic Ladies, United started the game well and Hughes, McCulley and Stewart all had chances to give United the lead but some stout defending from Hamilton kept United at bay.

The rutted and heavy pitch hampered both teams’ attempts to play football and Hamilton nearly sneaked a half time lead but the striker’s effort was easily saved by Clarke in the United goal.

United started the second half again the brighter of the two teams and again were unlucky on several occasions to break down the Hamilton rear guard.

United nearly took the lead on the hour mark when a long range effort by Milne cannoned off the cross bar and to safety.

Hamilton were looking to break on the counter attack and only some good defending from the United defence and GK kept Hamilton out.

United took the lead on the 67 minute mark. After a move involving Harkin and Gallagher, McCulley was fed down the left wing and her cut back was tucked into the corner of the net by Emma STEWART in her first start of the season, scoring her second goal in as many games.

The goal lifted the young United side and again were unlucky not to add to the tally with substitute Blyth firing wide from 20 yards.

Hamilton chased the game and United were pinned back as Hamilton searched for the equaliser. Clark in United’s goal dealt with everything thrown at her confidently and United held on for a deserved victory in only their third game in the SWPL.

“I am extremely proud of the girls today. Their work rate and application to the game despite the pitches poor condition was first class. They showed a real togetherness to work for one another and for me that was most pleasing thing about today’s performance.”
