GLASGOW CITY v EDINBURGH LADIES - Sunday 27th. May 2007

Glasgow City finished their last home game of the season in style with a 6-2 win against Edinburgh at Glasgow Green.

City opened the scoring within 2 minutes courtesy of a close range strike from wide left player Katharina Lindner. Edinburgh responded only five minutes later when a good in-swinging corner from Edinburgh’s Debbie McWhinnie was only parried into the air by Angie Livingston in the City goal. Edinburgh’s Molly McKean picked up the loose ball and headed straight into the City net to even things up.

Edinburgh then had the chance to go 2-1 ahead against the run of play when Laura Montgomery was judged to have brought down McWhinnie in the penalty box. However, City breathed a sigh of relief when McWhinnie steered the resultant penalty well wide of the goal.

As the game progressed City were playing some fantastic football and scored one of their best goals of the season when a great passing move involving Megan Sneddon resulted in an excellent run and cross from Jane Ross down the right flank which was met superbly by Lindner at the front post.

In the second half City went from strength to strength and dominated and game. More goals came from Suzanne Lappin, Lindner, Ruseha Littlejohn and Danika Dalziel to make it 6-1 to City. With a couple of minutes to go Diana Barry pulled a consolation back for Edinburgh who must be pleased with a much improved season that should see them finish a well placed third for the first time in their history.

Glasgow City meanwhile are resigned to second place for the consecutive season and Hibernian secured the League title with a 5-0 win over Kilmarnock.

It's mind the gap for City's Cooper

GLASGOW CITY coach Kate Cooper has turned psychologist to ensure her team don't give up on their title dream.

With only two games left to go in the Thompsons Premier League the championship is still not out of reach and Cooper said: "We are currently five points behind Hibs and play them on the last day of the season.

"Our goal difference is slightly poorer so we need them to lose this Sunday and then, of course, against us too. advertisement "

It is a tall order, but heaven forbid the impossible happens and we have not ensured that we have won our games."

Hibernian welcome Kilmarnock to Edinburgh this weekend and if there was a team that just may be able to defeat them in a one-off match, it may be Killie.

They have a number of experienced players who have played at international level and if they can combine this with a bit of hard work and luck, Glasgow City may well owe them a huge debt.

However, City have their own difficult match to take care of first as they entertain third-placed Edinburgh at Glasgow Green.

Edinburgh have improved immensely this season and Cooper knows the problems they can give her team.

She said: "We have defeated them in the League and in the Cup already this year, but both of those games were extremely tough.

"They have a great strike force in Debbie McWhinnie and Diana Barry and if our defence can contain them, I am more than confident we can make it three wins out of three."

If the impossible happens and Hibernian slip up against Kilmarnock, we may just have the best finale in the history of Scotland's top women's league ... in football you just never know.
