Glasgow City defeated Hamilton Accies 4-0 tonight at Glasgow Green.

With Hamilton having won their opening two fixtures, City and Accies were the only two sides left in the Premier league, with a 100% start to the campaign. However as the game progressed it became clear that City would be the only team left with their record intact, dominating the match from start to finish.

In strong winds and a greasy surface, City struggled at times to play their normal game, but they still managed to carve Accies open time and time again, but frustrated the home support with some poor finishing.

City did however score four goals and three came in the first half. City striker Suzanne Malone opened the scoring 15 minutes into the match, firing home well from a tight angle in the box. The Scotland call up then got her second with some brilliant forward play. A good run from Malone was picked out by Rachel Corsie, who set the striker free down the left hand side. Malone then beat her marker, cut inside and finished well to make it 2-0 to City.

Goal number three came from Jane Ross who drove into to the box firing low past the keeper, after good switch of play by Leanne Ross.

In the second half, City created countless chances but were only able to convert once more, this time  with Ruesha Littlejohn getting on the scoresheet. A City free kick into the Accies box, saw a shot from Corsie blocked, with the rebound falling to Sue Lappin who placed her effort against the post and into the path of Littlejohn who scored with ease.

Although pleased with the three points, City boss Peter Caulfield was a little frustrated his side only managed four goals.

He said, “We created numerous opportunities tonight but the final ball wasn’t always the best. A little lack of composure in front of goal made the scoreline more respectable. However, the objective was to get three points tonight and we achieved that comfortably.”

Manager Kevin Murphy was disappointed with the outcome of this match, “City dominated most of the game but the manner in which we lost the goals was extremely annoying, we did not make City work hard enough for their goals”.This was always going to be a difficult match for the Accies, Glasgow City are the current Scottish champions having won the title last season in a tough run in against Celtic and Spartans.

With Hamilton having won their opening two fixtures and sitting at the top of the league Accies were out to hold on to that advantage. In strong winds and a greasy surface, City struggled at times to play their normal game and Accies although on the defensive for the majority of the match still managed to play some of their own football and create the odd chance or two.

The match turned in City’s favour on 15 minutes when with Accies caught up the park a long ball out of defence was latched onto by striker Suzanne Malone and she ran through and slotted the ball low past Elaine Fleming in the Accies goal.Accies were still trying to go forward when they could and a strong piece of play by Colette Fleming released Susan Fairlie whose strike just went by the City goalies left hand post.

On 37 minutes City scored their second of the match. Rachel Corsie picked out a good run down the left by Malone. Malone from a possible offside position then beat her marker, cut inside and finished well to make it 2-0 to City. Goal number three came just before halftime when a bad mistake in the Accies defence allowed Jane Ross to drive into to the box before firing low past the keeper.Due to a bad injury to Jen King at the end of the first half Accies had to start the second period with a revamped back four.

City started the second half as they had finished the fit on top and creating chances but to the Accies defences credit the buckled down to the job in hand managed to keep city out until the 75th minute. A debatable free kick was awarded just outside the Accies box, the free kick was hit in low from the right and evaded everyone. Accies could not get the ball cleared and after a few defensive blocks the ball struck the post and rebounded into the path of Littlejohn who scored with ease.

There was no further scoring and the only point of interest after this was the introduction on 80 minutes of 15 year old Amy Bulloch who doesn’t look out of place playing with the Premier team. Manager Kevin Murphy summed the match up “ I thought the second half performance was much better and we started to compete in the middle of the park. We lost heavily to City last time we played so we have shown some improvement. We still have some players to come back from injury so the team will get stronger as the season progresses. Our next match against Forfar now takes on real significance if we want to maintain our good start to the season”.
