Forfar v Kilmarnock - Sunday 22nd. April 2007

Forfar 3 v Kilmarnock 3

In what was an entertaining match both sides will feel they did enough to win but should reflect that a draw was a fair result. Kilmarnock started the brighter with Becky Stokes almost putting the visitors ahead within 2 minutes firing just over the bar from close range. She made no mistake a few minutes later when a fine cross field pass found her unmarked, her right foot proving to be more accurate than her left had been minutes earlier.

Forfar were under severe pressure in the opening 20 minutes and were fortunate to be only one down and as often happens they equalised against the run of play when Caren Webster out stripped the Kilmarnock defence to put them back in the match. Kilmarnock continued to press, but slowly Forfar picked up the pace of the game with the rustiness from having to sit out the last few weeks wearing off. On the stroke of half time Tracey Brogan demonstrated her blistering pace leaving Kilmarnock’s defence in her wake as she latched on to a through ball and slotted calmly pass the keeper.

HT 2-1

If Forfar were fortunate to be ahead at half time Kilmarnock’s slice of good fortune came immediately after the break when Becky Stokes, receiving the ball in the six yard area having not retreated from a cleared corner, recovered from her surprise at not being called for offside to tap in the simplest of chances.

Forfar’s midfield, in particular Jane McFarlane and Nicola Davidson both having outstanding games, were increasingly exerting control and it was only fitting that from a driving run from McFarlane Forfar retook the lead, Caren Webster latching on to McFarlane’s unselfish final pass to put the home team in front.

Both teams continued to play open attacking football, Forfar’s Brogan hitting the bar and shots from Lynn Duncan and Caren Webster going agonisingly wide.

Kilmarnock’s “never say die” attitude was rewarded when Lynsey Bayne stole a late equaliser in the 92nd minute.

Both coaches agreed a draw was a fair result and both rued their teams' missed opportunities.
