Forfar
Farmington made
it two wins on
the trot as they
defeated Dundee
United at a rain
soaked Market
Muir.
Previous
meetings between
the two sides
had produced
entertainment
and goals in
equal
proportions, and
the latest
encounter served
up an enjoyable
spectacle to
both sets of
supporters.
Both teams set a
high tempo from
the off, but it
wasn’t until the
10th minute that
either goal was
really
threatened.
United’s Laurie
Denny picked up
the ball on the
left flank and
her cross just
eluded Laura
Boag. This
sprung
Farmington into
action, and for
the 2nd game in
succession the
12th minute of
the game saw the
away net bulge
courtesy of the
foot of Caroline
Heron.
Persistence on
the left flank
by Bruce saw the
ball fed to
Heron who
created space
for herself
before
unleashing a
furious drive
over Gemma
Clark. As can be
the case with
derby matches,
the attacking
impotence
floated from
side to side,
with Untied
perhaps edging
it in terms of
possession. The
home side
extended their
lead in the 31st
minute, and it
was Heron again
on the score
sheet. Bruce had
done well to
flick on from
Steph Milne,
with Caren
Webster laying
the ball off to
Heron who
dispatched the
ball into the
top corner of
the net. Heron
could have
secured her
hat-trick 2
minuets later,
but her control
and shot was
well saved by
Clark. With the
half time break
approaching
Forfar increased
the pressure on
the United
rearguard. A
free kick
dispatched by
Nicola Davidson
eluded the
marauding duo of
Milne and
Webster and it
seemed that the
interval would
see Forfar
retain their 2-0
lead. This was
not to be the
case as on the
very stroke of
half time, Kim
Thomson powered
in a corner that
deflected into
the net off of a
Dundee United
defender.
In a reversal
from the last
meeting between
the two sides,
it was United
who asserted
themselves in
the 2nd half,
having the bulk
of the
possession
without really
creating any
clear cut
chances. United
were successful
in finding the
net in 55th
minute when
Claire Thoms
reacted quickest
to bundle home
after an error
from McNicoll.
Michaela Brodie
powered an
effort over the
bar two minutes
later, and
McNicoll saved
well from
McCulley in the
65th minute as
United pushed to
further reduce
the deficit.
Brodie was on
target in the
77th minute
however when she
picked up the
ball 25 yards
out and deftly
curled the ball
into the top
corner of
McNicoll’s net.
In the closing
stages Angela
Waite tested the
United backline
on a few
occasions with
some powerful
running, while
the Farmington
rearguard of
Thomson,
Collier, Garrett
and Milne kept
the visiting
attack at bay.
Forfar would
retain their
lead until the
final whistle
however to
secure a further
3 SWPL points.
Farmington Head
Coach Mark
Nisbet will have
been delighted
with his teams
overall effort
and three first
half goals,
while United’s
vastly improved
2nd half showing
constituted a
fitting send off
for departing
Head Coach Iain
Ross.
