DUNDEE UNITED v HAMILTON - S.W.P.L. - Sunday 12th. April 2009
Dundee United 3 - 2 Hamilton
Dundee United picked up their second win on the spin as a double from Laurie Denney and single strike from Emma McCulley saw United move up to 6th in the table after defeating Hamilton Accies 3-2 at a sun soaked Downfield Park.
The first half was almost played as a chess match with both teams working extremely hard despite the warm conditions. United had the better of the first half hour but only had a Tammy Harkin free kick that hit the bar to show for their efforts. Hamilton had the better of the final 15 minutes of the half with a deflected shot from a corner hitting the far post.
Half Time :- Dundee United 0 – 0 Hamilton Accies
The game burst into life 10 minutes into the second half. A corner into the box by Hughes wasn’t cleared by Hamilton and Laurie DENNEY was on hand to turn and hook the ball into the net much to the delight of her team mates.
United then sat back and allowed Hamilton back into the game. On 70 minutes after a succession of corners, United cleared another Hamilton corner only for the ball to land at the feet of a Hamilton player who unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner from 30 yards. Hamilton took the lead 4 minutes later, a long hopeful ball was chased by Sarah CRILLY who hit a fantastic left foot volley into the top corner.
United then replaced Fraser with Godfrey. Godfrey nearly made an instant impact, a cross into the box from Denney landed at Godfrey’s feet and she picked her spot only for the post to deny Godfrey her first goal for the club.
United equalised on 79 minutes. McCULLEY picked the ball up 40 yards from goal, outstripped the Accies defence and tucked the ball into the corner of the net.
United then grabbed what turned out to be the winner on 81 minutes. Quick thinking from Tammy Harkin played in Lorna Young who’s cut back was met by DENNEY and despite the keepers best efforts, the ball crossed the line. Denney was then replaced by Kelly.
Hamilton were unlucky not to grab an equaliser. McCulloch cut in from the left and shot from 20 yards only for her shot to hit the cross bar and away to safety.

Manager Mary McDonald commented after the game - "I am delighted to pick up all 3 points again. We didn’t play as well as we have in the last two weeks or create as many chances as we would have liked today, however our work rate was fantastic and the girls showed great resilience to come back from 2-1 down again. Hamilton are bigger and stronger than us as a team but we competed extremely well against the physical threat that they pose. We now travel to Boroughmuir which will be an extremely difficult match.
