DUNDEE UNITED v FORFAR - S.W.P.L. - Sunday 24th. May 2009
Dundee United 1 - 3 Forfar
Forfar elected to play against a strong wind and the Downfield slope in the first half and did well to restrict their Dundee rivals to a single goal. Dundee applied considerable early pressure taking the lead in the 12th minute through Emma McCulley. McCulley, Dundee’s most dangerous player, took full advantage of the absence of linesmen to slip behind the defensive line and despite the Forfar protests neatly chipped the advancing Fiona McNicoll. Forfar's first real effort came in the 20th minute when Caroline Heron shot wide from 25 yards. The Forfar midfield getting to grips with the conditions began to win the 50:50s, Nicola Davidson and Alana Bruce in particular drove forward at every opportunity and the game swung from end to end. Both sides forced a number of corners without ever really threatening. The defence looked increasingly assured and McNicoll in particular was particularly commanding.Avril Gourlay shot wide five minutes before the break as increasingly the team grew in confidence knowing the elements would be with them in the second half.
H-T 1-1
not to be awarded a penalty for a rash challenge in the box. Forfar put the game beyond Dundee in the 63rd minute when Carline Heron, scoring her third goal in 3 games, struck home from close in. While Forfar failed to extend their lead further they continued to dominate the game, Joanna Collier won the aerial battles in midfield and the back four handled the dwindling threat posed by an increasingly dispirited United. Nicola Davidson, relishing getting further forward, latched on to a fine pass from Rhona Gordon only to see her shot go agonisingly wide. The final 20 minutes of the game fizzled out with the result no longer in doubt. Both teams continued to battle but with a couple of nasty head knocks and unnecessary bookings creeping in the whistle was welcomed on both sides.
This hard fought and well-earned victory takes Forfar above Dundee United into fifth place with one match remaining. A victory against Kilmarnock would give Forfar their highest ever final placing in the Womens' Premier League and cap an excellent season that has seen considerable progress both on and off the field.
It took all of 39 seconds from the restart for Forfar to draw level. A fine cross field pass from Davidson found Bruce wide right who swept past her fullback before smashing the ball pass Clark in the Dundee goal.Minutes later Gourlay saw another attempt go wide as Forfar took complete control of the game. Bruce giving her opposing full back a torrid time, minutes later put the ball just wide of the goal after a fine run. With Forfar rampant it wasn’t long before they took the lead, Davidson followed up a loose ball created by pressure from Heron to volley home with her right foot. Caren Webster was next to go close following good interplay between Ali McCaig, Davidson and Webster down the left flank. Dundee were still taking the game to Forfar when they could and were unfortunate
