DUNDEE UNITED v BOROUGHMUIR - S.W.P.L. - Sunday 5th. October 2008
Dundee United continued there
solid start to the season with a convincing 4-0 home win against Boroughmuir
Thistle in the SWPL. The win moves the young United side up to fourth in the
table.
Boroughmuir started the brighter of the two sides but amazingly found themselves
two down after only eight minutes.
The first goal came on five minutes, united won the ball in midfield and was
played out to Hughes whose cross was met by in form Emma STEWART who tucked the
ball into the net to give United a 1-0 lead.
3 minutes later and United were two up. A corner in from Fraser was met a by a
Boroughmuir defender and despite the Boroughmuir keepers best efforts, she
couldn’t keep the ball out and United were two up.
United then had chance after chance to add a third as Stewart, McCulley, Hughes
and Fraser all passed up opportunities to add to United’s two goal lead.
United’s third eventually came. A Ball over the top was met by HUGHES who took
one touch before lashing the ball beyond Wright to take United’s lead to three.
Boroughmuir were not without there chances and the dangerous Alana Marshall and
Karen McKenzie both passed up good chances to get a goal back.
United added a fourth on the half hour mark. After Milne and Gallagher
dispossessed Harley in the midfield, the ball was fed to McCULLEY by Fraser who
coolly ran on and tucked the ball passed Wright and give United a very well
deserved 4-0 lead.
United could have had a fifth if it wasn’t for a dubious offside flag, as
Stewart flashed the ball over Wright from twenty yards only for the goal to be
chopped off by the nearside linesman.
Half Time :- Dundee United 4 – 0 Boroughmuir Thistle
Boroughmuir made three half time changes and again started the half well but
without really creating too many clear cut chances and the United defence
holding Boroughmuir to shots from distance.
Stewart again had a chance to score United’s fifth after a short passback from
Suzanne Gill but Wright was equal to the chance and made a great block with her
legs.
Marshall for Boroughmuir had a few long range efforts easily saved by Clark in
United’s goal as Boroughmuir pushed to grab a goal back.
Boroughmuir had a golden chance to grab a goal back with virtually the last kick
of the game. McKenzie has been brought down by Williamson in the box and
Montgomerys penalty came off the keepers right hand post and to safety.
The referee blew the full time whistle after the resulting free kick to United.

Manager Mary McDonald commented after the game – “I thought the girls were
terrific today especially in the first half. We were solid at the back and
always looked a threat going forward and I am really pleased with our overall
performance. We’ve picked up seven points out of nine and we will travel to
Aberdeen next week confident of picking up all three points.”
