DUNDEE UNITED v ABERDEEN - S.W.P.L. - Sunday 3rd. May 2009
Dundee United 0 - 1 Aberdeen
Aberdeen travelled to Downfield Park on Sunday to face Dundee United looking for another win against the Premier League newcomers and three points to take them up the table.
The home side took the game straight to Aberdeen with an attack via McCulley on the right wing, crossing to Young who got the better of Murray but her soft shot caused no problems. Young had a clear chance from a second cross but was just short of connecting. At the other end, Hamill sent in a teasing lob for Wright but the United keeper was on to it quickly.
Aberdeen came more into the game putting passes together and working forward but the home defence were mopping up well, Hughes in particular always present. From a corner, Aberdeen’s Andersen picked up the clearance but her low shot was saved.
The threat up front from United had diminished now with the Aberdeen defence killing off any attacks but with Aberdeen unable to penetrate the Dundee defence the game was being played out between the two penalty boxes.
The home side were proving to be quite physical which led to a free kick 30 yards out in the middle. Murray fired straight through the wall and the keeper did well to tip it past the post. Another challenge on the edge of the box was taken by HAMILL who curved the ball past the wall into left of the net right to put Aberdeen ahead right on the whistle for half time.
Half Time Dundee United 0 – Aberdeen 1
United now had the wind behind them and played a succession of long balls forward, their best chance coming 14 minutes into the half. A pass forward went to Young who was offside but play was waved on, she sprinted forward but keeper Taylor did enough to force her to place wide. Again the game was being played mainly in the middle third, both teams unable to create many chances. Dundee persisted with long balls to McCulley on the right but the Aberdeen defence prevented any crosses in to the danger area.
A corner in from United was headed, looping towards goal but Taylor caught it high and Aberdeen replied with a pass forward to Martin but she was intercepted before she could shoot, Hamill picked up and played to Small but her ambitious shot from a tight angle went high.
The game faded into a competition to see who could get the longest ball up the pitch with little in the way of silky football as both teams were keen to get in the box and look for a chance. United stepped up a gear towards the end winning a succession of corners but the visitors held firm and picked up three valuable points.
