Killie Kill Off Dons Winning Run
Kilmarnock took the initiative early on and with the wind at their back pushing into the Aberdeen half. Early pressure paid off with an attack down the wide right which saw COOPER strike a long high shot into the net two minutes into the game. The Dons replied on the right, Stirling earning a free kick near the corner flag, delivered into the box, McLellan connected sending it high but the Killie keeper caught easily.Kilmarnock pushed forward on both wings launching passes to find Cooper and Maxwell. Aberdeen’s Corsie charged forward 40 yards towards the box working a one two with Hamill before over running the ball to let the Killie defence in to clear. The visitors replied forcing a corner off keeper Hutcheson, the flag kick came in to Quinn who shot high over the bar.The Reds pushed forward, McLellan chasing after Fowler forcing a passback which the keeper narrowly missed rebounding off the Aberdeen striker who was quick to chase in. Killie’s right winger Stokes, twisted and turned around Corsie before crossing in front of goal but luckily for the Dons the Killie strikers were too far behind to connect.A cross from the right was fumbled by Hutcheson, while on the ground the defence did enough to delay Cooper’s strike to allow the Dons keeper time to get back up and save the close range shot. On 30 minutes Scott replaced the injured Stirling forcing a reshuffle. Aberdeen were getting the odd break forward, Corsie, now in right midfield, making advances into the box but the Killie defence gave nothing away.A long ball from the left saw Hutcheson collide in the air with Stokes and both players went down hurt in the stramash from which the Dons stopper seemed to come off badly. Five minutes before half time Kilmarnock passed long and wide right, Taylor intercepted heading high. Killie again were first to the falling ball then COOPER broke forward on the right with another high shot finding the net.Half time Aberdeen 0 – Kilmarnock 2The second half saw Aberdeen keeper Hutcheson unable to continue, striker McLellan replacing her in goal leaving the Dons with Wright on her own up front withFeregova sloting into midfield. The visitors continued to be on top from the kick off, Maxwell and Cooper the target for long balls from Scotland International midfielder McDonald. A short passback from Feregova made an opening for Cooper forcing Taylor into a precision sliding tackle in the box, conceding a corner to rescue an almost certain goal. Sent into the near post Taylor headed away for Cooper to collect and send in again but stand in keeper McLellan collected comfortably. The Dons seemed under the cosh now, Killie’s McDonald collecting loose midfield balls and spreading them at will. The long balls forward threatened all the time but the Killie forwards were constantly offside spoiling good work from their midfield much to the frustration of their defenders.Aberdeen pushed for a spell, Martin and Wright breaking forward. Wright chased a long Aberdeen pass in space but slipped and stumbled for Burns to nip in and clear. The Dons brighter spell continued but the midfield seemed to be unable to pick out key passes and find a red shirt. The pressure continued winning a free kick 40 yards out which Corsie drifted high into the box. It bounced just over the Killie defence and WRIGHT tipped it over the keeper to score. However thirty minutes into the half the Killie pressure paid off again this time as a cross came in from wide left to the near post and was angled in by STOKES for their third.Aberdeen seemed to be getting more possession again towards the end, unlucky not to score, Martin slipping a cross to Hamill in the box. She nipped it off the keeper’s hands and then fell as the ball trundled towards goal to be cleared off the line by Burns.Aberdeen Team :-Jo Hutcheson (Mirka Feregova), Shireen Bradford, Jenni Taylor, Carolyn Hather, Rachel Corsie, Melissa Stirling (Paula Scott), Rachel Hamill, Susan Murray, Claire Martin, Nikki Wright, Helen McLellanDave U, 31 January 2007
