ABERDEEN v GLASGOW CITY - S.W.P.L. - Sunday 21st. September 2008
City Remain Undefeated
Glasgow City edged one point closer to leaders Celtic and are the only team still with a 100% record in the Premier League after their 3-0 win away to Aberdeen.
Always a difficult away match, City dominated play for the first 45 minutes and took the lead through Sue Lappin who rose to head home a corner from Leanne Ross. Despite further chances, City were unable to add to their lead and went in at half time 1-0 up.
In the second half, City continued to create more chances against the Dons and doubled their lead through Scotland and City midfielder Megan Sneddon. Receiving a cross field pass from attacking full back Emma Fernon, Sneddon hit the goal of the game when she fired a powerful 35 yard drive into the back of the Aberdeen net.
City then made a number of changes, bringing on a total of five subs over the next ten minutes and it was substitute Rachel Corsie who scored number three when she converted another City corner. It was a well taken goal by the former Aberdeen player and gave City the result their dominance deserved.
Despite the result, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki was a little disappointed. He said, “To be honest I was furious at half time. We are a much better side than we were today and I want to ensure we play to the same standards every single week and not just when we want to. We did pick things up in the second half which was good, but we should have done so much better today. However, we came here for three points and a clean sheet and we achieved that.”

Aberdeen faced league leaders Glasgow City at home on Sunday minus regular keeper Kandy Johnston. Defender Jenni Taylor picked up the gloves and Aberdeen reshuffled the squad to field a 5-4-1 formation prepared for a hard match.
City had more possession in the early stages but the home side had the first clear chance. Wright winged up the right to cross into the box creating a chance but City keeper, Livingstone held cleanly. The visitors then surged forward, Dons keeper Taylor diving at feet to kill the move.
J. Ross for City attacked forcing P.Scott to concede the first corner which the Dons dealt with without incident. City used their wide players attempting to get behind the Aberdeen defence, J. Ross winging up the right to find L.Ross who took a pot shot. At the other end Aberdeen had three players on the end of a Wright cross in, Hamill putting a long shot wide.
City maintained the pressure and opened the scoring 23 minutes in from a corner. Played short then whipped into the back post for LAPPIN to head in.
An error by Patterson at the back caused problems for City as S. Scott pounced on the ball and shot but keeper Johnstone got a foot to block before the defence hustled the ball away. It was backs against the wall now for the Reds as they absorbed a spell of pressure from the visitors as they attacked and Murray put in a key tackle to snatch the ball away from L.Ross but conceded the flag kick.
Sent in and hit on target, Taylor pulled off a great save to knock it over the bar then two more corners and a free kick were all dealt with by a resolute Aberdeen.
Half Time :- Aberdeen 0 – Glasgow City 1
City broke forward quickly in the second half but the Dons defence were still on their toes snuffing out the attacks. Aberdeen pressed forward for a spell forcing City into an uncharacteristic spell of long clearances from the back. The first clear chance of the half fell to City 15 minutes in L Ross crossing from the left and a weak shot easily held by Taylor. Seconds later the ball was in the net but adjudged offside
A free kick for the home side was hustled away by former Aberdeen player Corsie as City chased forward again but again the pass was just too long for Brown and Gauld held her up as Taylor cleared.
Glasgow City were taking advantage of some long throws, with the target, Lappin receiving just inside the 6 yard box and heading just wide. A second duplicate was headed by Hamill for Taylor to hold and a third was met by Lappin but Hamill did enough to put her off and it was cleared.
City made it two in 25 minutes as Aberdeen work hard to clear the box under pressure, the ball broke out to Scotland midfielder SNEDDON 30 yards out and she hit a long shot in just under the bar.
The Dons had a spell of good passing football, pushing into City’s last third but Montgomery, Campbell and Corsie where working well to mop up the attacks. Aberdeen had a chance as Martin dashed up the left then found Fitzpatrick but she was well shepherded by Campbell.
For City, a Lindner cross threatened forcing Mckenzie to concede a corner which Stewart volleyed wide. The Reds were still threatening as Small broke forward allowing a Djahansouzi cross in but City intercepted. Wright and Fitzpatrick worked together to reach Martin, her cross in bobbled awkwardly for Djahansouzi before she could strike.
The Reds would have settled for two nil as a good performance against the league leaders but just on full time City added a third from a corner played low to CORSIE who hit the goal in off the bar.
