| UNDER 13 SCOTTISH CUP SPARTANS 2 EAST END TORNADO 1 |
|
25 September 2010
|
| In the Girls Under 13's Scottish Cup quarter final Spartans overcame Aberdeen team East End Tornado 2 – 1 after extra time. A crowd of over 100 enjoyed the action with both teams playing some great football. |
 |
The visitors started strongest with a good spell of play ending in Jade Neill scoring to put them one up at half time. Spartans came into the game much more in the second half with Naomi Hume scoring the equaliser from close range following a corner. With the score at 1-1 the game went to extra time. It took a goal by Spartans midfielder Chloe Gilhooley to split the teams and take the home team into the semi final draw.
Credit goes to both sets of players who produced a really exciting match and great advert for the girl’s game.

| SPARTANS U13's REACH SCOTTISH CUP QUARTER FINALS |
|
28 August 2010
|
 |
Hamilton reds were the visitors for the under 13 last sixteen Scottish cup tie at the academy, with both teams producing an entertaining and competitive display with the home side edging it over the piece. Naomi Hume slotted home from close range to give the home side an early lead, this was followed soon after by a second with Caitlin Hall scoring directly from a corner. The away side battled hard and played some fine passing football with the woodwork and several fine saves from Eartha Cummings keeping Hamilton at bay. Eventually Hamilton
reaped the reward of their hard work with firstly their opener and secondly squaring the tie at 2 -2 for half time.
|
|
Not long after the re-start Cara Ness cut in from the left and restored Spartans lead with a fine solo effort to make it 3-2 although the game was still as end to end as it was in the first half. A throw out from the keeper found Chloe Gilhooley wide right whose direct run and excellent cross resulted in a Hamilton own goal. With the game now 4-2 to Spartans the away side still had a part to play when a good cross field passing move resulted in them bringing the score now to 4-3. In the dying minutes Ronaigh Douglas capped a fine game when she slotted a perfect pass in behind the Hamilton defence for Caitlin Hall to grab her second of the day with an assured finish to end the game 5-3. A final word of thanks goes to our referee Jimmy Simm whose encouraging style and handling of the game only added to the enjoyment of the game for all concerned.
Meanwhile the U15 girls lost 5-0 to Bonnyrigg in a League match. They played well and put together some nice passing moves but were beaten by a well organised Bonnyrigg team.

| SPARTANS U13's WIN BROXBURN ATHLETIC COLTS FOOTBALL FESTIVAL |
|
15 August 2010
|
 |
Spartans U13 girls played in the Broxburn Athletic Colts Football Festival. It was a day of celebration for Broxburn who were officially opening their new facility by playing a game against Dundee United and it turned out to be a day of celebration for Spartans girls too.
In their first game Spartans played good passing football against Hutchison Vale, the team who were runners up in this season’s league cup. Although Hutchison Vale had opportunities, goals by Chloe Gilhooley and Megan Casey gave Spartans the ideal start, a 2-0 victory.
Spartans faced the hosts Broxburn in their second game.
|
|
Spartans had to be strong against a determined home team and their hard work paid off when the ball was passed to Caitlin Hall who showed great composure on the ball to score. The Spartans striker went on to score a second goal before Broxburn scored an own goal giving Spartans a 3–0 win.
The final game against Boroughmuir was in the middle of the day and the heat was beginning to have some effect. Spartans started slowly and for ten minutes had to defend constantly as they lost their focus and shape. Saves were made by Eartha Cummings-Budd and also Naomi Hume who had to step into goal for a five minute spell. Eventually the players composed themselves and picked up the pace. A quickly taken throw in resulted in Olivia Aitchison taking the ball down and turning into the box before shooting into the net. This fine goal seemed to settle the team and they went on to add another from Caitlin Hall. The final result another 2-0 win.
The team ended the day tired but knowing they had all worked hard to contribute to what was a highly successful tournament with three clean sheets and three wins out of three.

Under 13 Girls Spartans 2 Hearts 1 |
|
8 May 2010
The league fixture between Spartans and Heart of Midlothian started with an evenly fought ten minutes. Spartans defence worked hard until on 17 minutes they started an attack that ended in them being awarded a free kick. Megan Mitchell took a great free kick, striking the ball into the top corner of the net. Just before half time Hearts scored from a corner to equalise, making the half time score 1-1.
In the second half Spartans midfield had most of the play. Spartans best move started with Caitlin Hall and ended with Olivia Aitchison going on a 20 metre run before shooting into the bottom corner of the net.
The score remained the same until full time giving Spartans a 2-1 win.

|
Spartans U13 Girls turn in a good second half to win through to the second round of the Scottish Cup. |
|
01 May 2010
Spartans U13 Girls faced Drumchapel Amateur Reds in the first round of the Scottish Cup at the Academy on Saturday morning.
The visiting team started brightly and enjoyed a lot of attacking pressure. However, the home defence managed the threats well but failed to make any progress up front. In a strong wind the ball was spending too much time in the air and Spartans, although containing the opposition didn't manage to get the ball under control and make any possession count. At half time the score was 0 - 0.
Early in the second half Drumchapel were awarded a free kick on the left and their striker shot hard and low into the far corner of the goal. The shot was worthy of a goal and reward for the hard work the visiting team were putting into the game. Going one down seemed to be the motivation Spartans needed to finally begin to pass the ball and make more opportunities going forward.
A good move in midfield finished with a pass to Olivia Aitchison who slotted the ball into the net. Drumchapel were always pushing forward and never gave up, but Spartans, having found the net once, continued to put together passing moves and went on to score two more goals from close range by Caitlin Hall and Megan Casey and a fourth, a cool side step and pass into the net by Chloe Gilhooley.
The final score of a match that was played in great spirit was Spartans 4, Drumchapel Amateur Reds 1.
Final word goes to the referee, Willie MacKenzie whose positive performance was praised by both teams coaching staff and spectators.
Spartans squad: Cummings, Ness, Robertson, Mitchell, Hume, Gilhooley, Casey, Hall, Aitchison.

| TOUGH HOME GAME FOR SPARTANS U13 GIRLS |
| |
20 March 2010
Spartans U13 girls entertained Hutchison Vale in a league match.
The first half was very even with the players working hard to break the deadlock. A great save by the Spartans keeper, Eartha Cummings kept the score 0-0 at half time.
Early in the second half Spartans pushed forward and were rewarded when Megan Mitchell opened the scoring with a fine goal. However it was only a matter of minutes before the visitors won a corner and converted it into an equaliser.
The game remained 1-1 for some time until a stunning shot from outside the box into the top corner of the net by Caitlin Hall once again put Spartans ahead. Hutchison Vale continued to work hard and make attacking moves and it took another dive at full stretch to her left by the Spartans keeper to keep the home team ahead. Spartans sealed the win with a great passing move that ended when Olivia Aitchison put a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Caitlin Hall who slotted it into the net to give Spartans a 3-1 win.

SPARTANS U15 8 BOROUGHMUIR WHITES 1
|
| |
07 March 2010
Spartans girls U15’s started the season with a fine 8-1 win over Boroughmuir Whites.
In the first match of the season and with several new players the team worked well together, keeping a good shape and producing accurate passing moves. This resulted in the first goal after ten minutes. Spartans had to defend several good attacking runs by Boroughmuir but kept the pressure on, ending the first half four goals up.
In the second half Boroughmuir again penetrated and the defence had to be strong. Spartans goalkeeper came out and took control when necessary and again the team turned good defensive play into attack. All members of the team played their part in the scoring of another four goals.
Boroughmuir never gave up and their determination was rewarded with a consolation goal late in the game.
This is a great start to the season and a solid base upon which to build.
Spartans goal scorers were Eve Cummings (2), Lucy Wales, Nicole Hannah, Olivia Aitchison, Rebecca Aitchison and Dionne Scott (2).
Next Saturday the U15’s have a League Cup fixture against Murieston at Inverleith Park, Edinburgh.

Sunday
25 January 2009
On Sunday 25th
January the girls played a friendly game at the Academy.
Despite losing to a strong team from
Falkirk there was a fantastic atmosphere and the loudest cheer went
up when Spartans No. 8 Georgia Adderley skilfully dribbled the ball
and shot past the Falkirk
goalkeeper to score a well deserved goal.
Both
hosts and guests enjoyed the warmth of the soup and surroundings of
the café afterwards.
The girls will
begin regular 7aside games in the
SE Scotland
under 11 development league in March.
These will be played at the Academy
each Sunday morning.
Despite only having played for a
short time the girls are developing their skills and awareness of
the game but above all are enjoying the experience of playing
football at Spartans.
The girls train
from 6-7 on a Monday evening at Spartans Community Academy with
their coaches Marc Gray and Heidi Mjoseng and would welcome any new
players who would like to come along.

Tuesday
30 September 2008
Following “taster
sessions” at
Inverleith
Park
last year ten girls have regularly attended training and formed
Spartans girls under 11 team.
Some of girls had played football
before but most were experiencing the game for the first time.
The first time the girls
represented the club they took part in the press launch of the
Scottish Government ‘Cashback’ scheme.
On a Tuesday morning during torrential
rain they sang Spartans songs, enjoyed the experience of meeting
senior players and dignitaries and were a credit to the club.
They made it into the newspapers, were on
television and on the web.
